Title: Admin or Member?
Description: Which would you rather be?
Black Angel - March 21, 2005 09:15 PM (GMT)
I believe that there are some people that shouldn't be admins.. i seen quite a few examples of people who shouldn't be admin..
1. there is the kind of admin that forgets it is a forum, and not a dictatorship.. where people are not entitled to a difference of opinion.. these are the admin who are quick to punish you, or ostracize you because you do not share their opinion. (mind you i am not talking about those who go around saying the forum sucks.. and anything else to that effect.) but i am talking about in general. For example, I was on this forum, where the subject of gay marriage came up, and the admin posted about how they are against it because its "icky" and a member posted that homosexuals are entitled to the same rights as heterosexuals, and that banning it would be no different than banning a minority or interracial marriage.. and that doing so would be unethical. The admin replied, "uh, maybe you should read my my post, instead of posting your own views.." and then locked the topic. wtf?
2. there is the admins who completely let the board go. and don't bother doing anything to the board, they don't start topics, or make any changes to the board.. as much as i hate to say it, my bro used be one of those people..
3. there is also the admins who have no clue as to what they are doing, and rely on others to do the easiest of things..
4. there are also the admins who don't respond well to criticism.. they'll have a 'suggestions area, and when members post their suggestions, then that admin will say no, and then lock the topic, without giving any reason, or thought to the suggestion..
Personally, I feel that i am as good a member as i am an admin, because i put forth an honest effort into helping make the forum a better place for all, as a member i can post ideas and thoughts, and what have you, but not have to worry about the stress of being an admin.. but i like being an admin better because i get to listen to my members and hear what they have to say and then make the necessary changes. yeah there is a lot of work involved, but i believe that the more work you put into something, the greater the outcome will be for all..
Would you rather be? admin? or member?
Snowflame - October 23, 2006 08:24 AM (GMT)
I would stay as member, feel I like it much better.
BlackCloudX - October 23, 2006 11:34 AM (GMT)
its a tie between staying admin and member
as a member you post stuff ideas and start stuff...the admins chat too but also keep an eye if we break any rules etc..
being an admin seems kinda fun to me IMO though i have never been an admin for IF forums and there control panel is quite different than other but starting up new stuff and watching other meambers are fun (me and VZ call it the "sneaky ninja" lol) sure being an admin takes up lot of work...but i have nothing to do nowadays
blazermax - October 23, 2006 01:54 PM (GMT)
id rather be a member. im just not the leader type, theres too much responsability and work that comes from controling a whole website that a whole lot of people go to.
Mystic Mage - October 23, 2006 04:08 PM (GMT)
I wouldn't mind really... I'd love to be helpful as a member. But then with becoming an admin also comes responsibilities. Not that i couldn't take them... They just may got on my nerves.
TBH if the opitunity came i wouldn't turn it down. But then i'm not desperate to get that oppitunity.
But i just love being a member since it lets be as random i want
Aeon - October 23, 2006 06:48 PM (GMT)
Well, if it was a forum that I wasn't accustomed to, I'd say member. But in a forum that I've attended for a while, where the members know me, and look up to me, I'd say admin.
A.J. The Echidna - October 23, 2006 09:03 PM (GMT)
Well the powers of an admin are great but even members coulds sway and change a forum. As with Aeon, I'd rather be a member of a forum I'm not familiar with and be an admin for a forum I've been on for awhile. I say where I am right now is a pretty good position so if A GM is technically just a member then I'm happy where I am.
Black Angel - October 23, 2006 09:22 PM (GMT)
A GM is not just a member.. a GM has the same powers as an admin, and can access almost the same areas..
the difference between an admin, a gmod, and a mod is the pm space, the number of bans, and how many emails they can send out at a time.. there might be other stuff but i may have forgotten it..
I like being an admin, but sometimes, I just want to be a member, and let someone else worry about the work..
I get pms on other forums, namely the proboards support, and invisionfree support board, from people asking me to be an admin on their forum.. or for me to help them setup their board..
I have even gotten pms from people asking me if i want to create a board with them..
the fact of the matter is, that these admins, or soon-to-be admins really have no clue as to what they are doing.. and they end up relying on other people to do the simplest of tasks..
seriously, Why create a forum if you don't know how to do things on it?
and then the owners of these forums get mad at me because i am not as active there, as i am here..
i'd be like.. wtf?! i have my own forum to run, and my own life as well so forgive me if i am not as dedicated to your forum as i am my own..
Dark Mage - October 24, 2006 06:08 AM (GMT)
I'd rather be a admin, cause I know what I'm doing, though I am firm,I am fair and will tell them to stop, but if they keep going,I warn them.
Dictator - October 25, 2006 07:08 PM (GMT)
I'm fine either way, if I'm unfamiliar with something I will ask questions but only if it is so new. I don't like being a "nag". I don't mind being a member, though there was a time that I was so used to being an admin I felt I was entitled to the position and when I didn't have it I felt jealousy. That was on MSN before a hacking on my site though and then I had nothing left. Now I'm used to being a member, as long as there are great admins I'll always be fine.

Being an administrator is a great resposabilitie cause menbers will surely follow the admins leads and if something goes wrong in the admis side. it will have consequences in the menbers actions and atitudes, and at the key word in a forum...RESPECT....yes, respect is very beautiful in both sides, menber or administrator....But in my opinion being a menber is more cool, cause you don't have to many responsabilities and can have an "easly life"
VirusZero - October 26, 2006 07:31 PM (GMT)
sometimes it's great being an admin, you get to help members with their stuff, and help them with their problems (not the common or irritating- 'help i can't post stuff". i mean more of the real interesting stuff, like finding out different perspectives.) and plus having members come to you for advice is nice.
but it also can be a pain dealing with all the problems of managing it, like investigating problems, and stuff like that, so in that regard its sometimes better to be a member but over all, i'd say be a member and enjoy it, but if the higher ups decide you are a good enough member to deserve promotion, then it's your call on want you want to do. but i'd accept it and just use the new power wisely, don't instigate problems and abuse the power.
Magirock - October 26, 2006 10:57 PM (GMT)
Being an admin is no easy task... Yeah, its great to control a whole webstie but if you are just someone who all that does is to ban random people or just act like a piece of shi* then that person is not made to be an admin... Nobody said that being leader would be an easy task...

I do that even if i'm not an admin...And that's because I've got time and I don't mind..
But i guess when you become an admin there's more questions
sambambam - November 12, 2006 09:12 PM (GMT)
me i was admin at one time back in the day but life had me out of the area so now i'm just a member but it good since i still can talk to all of yall
Gameshrk90 - November 12, 2006 09:19 PM (GMT)
I don't care what I am as long as I can still go to the forum.

I'm not sure if I could pick which I would rather be. I mean, if you are an admin, you get to do something great, you look at the work you did, and you say to yourself, "This is what I have worked so hard for, and I love it!", and it's a great feeling. And if you are a member, your have the fun of sharing everything with the other members all around, (basically, just having fun!). But personally, I wouldn't just want to have the fun, so that 's another reason why i would want to be an admin. I guess I would agree with Gameshrk90 the most. The only thing is that I want to make sure that I can keep up with the work that I would have as an Admin.
B.A. from looking at the opening of the topic, I would have to say that you are a great admin. As I said earlier, I absolutely LOVE the graphics and such here. But this topic definitely shows that you work hard for this forum to be up, and for us all to be able to discuss topics and have fun!
I do know of the other kinds of admins that you were referring to, and it truly is a disappointment to see. I was once apart of another forum that has been gone for a little while, and the root admin there had done nothing to make the forum. Not only had he not done the graphics on the forum, but he had barely even seen the html of the portal. The forum was up since November 05, and he just learned html just a few months ago. The only thing that he really did was come up with the forum's idea, and pay for the hosting. The forum ended up turning into a software company (which hasn't even begun to develop one application) and the forum had been deleted by "accident". It is a shame since the idea was nice.
But seeing an admin like you, it makes me feel extremely proud to be a member of this forum. Thanks for putting up this topic B.A. ;D
Mystic Mage - November 13, 2006 08:51 PM (GMT)
Yeah so i see why BA BDX VZ are the main mods and then you got AJ and fish as the mods... all thoses are hard workers and have been here for a while

You forgot to mention GMODs can't use the Admin CP.
Mystic Mage - November 15, 2006 06:45 AM (GMT)
DM she can't get it right every time... Sheesh
Dark Mage - November 15, 2006 06:49 AM (GMT)
I know,I just mentioned it for her though.
HalfDemonDan - November 18, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
I'd rather stay a member than be an admin. At least until I learned to run a site. Other than that I have no idea how to change skins and all that junk so I would just be better off as a regular member...
VirusZero - November 18, 2006 03:02 AM (GMT)
If memory serves... Gmods CAN access the acp. Gmods just can't access all the areas of the acp that an admin can.
Black Angel - December 3, 2006 11:30 PM (GMT)
Yep that is correct..
and speaking of which, two of our gmods have been demoted..
if they return here, and resume activity, then they may be reisnstated..
but until then, they are at elite status..
and we definitely have all of the staff we'll need for now..
Krypt - December 3, 2006 11:34 PM (GMT)
member, no doubt. Admin's job is just too tough.
