I am quite active on the PBS board, because I have a friend of mine who still uses PB, and she occasionally needs help..
Well I was reading a topic, where a member had said that IPB and IF was much better than PB, (I agree with them whole-heartedly..) and I noticed that words "IPB and IF" had been replaced by "software not as good as proboards" and "yetanotherforumhost"
Now, I gotta say that I know for a fact that Proboards is not as good as IF/IPB, in that they lack many administrative, as well as member features, that IF, and IPB members seem to enjoy.
Not only that, if in the event that your board gets cracked, you lose everything.
The only thing that they can restore are the categories. That's it.
With IF/IPB, that is not the case.
On PB, if someone guesses your Admin password, they have access to everything, for as long as they want.
On IPB/IF, the admin session times out after 2 hours..
and the only way they can gain access without guessing the admin password, is if they also guess the [randomly generated] MD5 hash that is at the end of the url.
On PB, they allow you to customize your avatar gallery.
Unfortunately, IF doesn't have this feature (but will when ZB comes out) and IPB, has it but in later versions, or if you manually replace the avatars that come with the IPB scripts.
However, even though PB has the ability to let you customize the avatar gallery, the avatars [custom, or default] can not be larger than 100 x 100 pixels.
IF/IPB allows you to specify as big as you want them to be..
In addition to that, IF/IPB has a lot more in the way of security features than PB.
If someone attacks your board, you can either turn it offline, and then choose which groups can access it, or you can change your hosted (IF) url, so that the attacker can't find you.
With PB, you are pretty much a sitting duck. If you turn the board offline, only staff can access it.
With IPB/IF, you can split, and merge topics, so that you will end up with 2 good topics if it goes off-topic..
With PB, you cannot..
Let's not forget that Proboards was developed using Perl.
IF/IPB was developed using PHP.
So comparing these two, would be like comparing apples to oranges.
Even so, the abundance of features available to IF/IPB users, both admin, and members alike, make this software stand out in a class by itself, and thus cannot be compared to by the lesser forum software companies out there.
The reason I posted this is because there comes a point in time where you should accept your faults, and short-comings, and admit that you are not the best, and then proceed to work on those faults and short comings.. but if you have your faults and short comings, and you still claim to be the best, then wouldn't that mean that you are just kidding yourself?
What are your thoughts?
They show the definition of ignorance there.
Sae couldn't have said it better...
