Woman drinks so much water she dies

POSTED: 10:33 p.m. EST, January 13, 2007

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner.

"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."

It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.

A preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death," said assistant Coroner Ed Smith.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.

"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.

Initially, contestants were handed 8-ounce bottles of water to drink every 15 minutes.

"They were small little half-pint bottles, so we thought it was going to be easy," said fellow contestant James Ybarra of Woodland. "They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk."

Ybarra said he quit after drinking five bottles. "My bladder couldn't handle it anymore," he added.

After he quit, he said, the remaining contestants, including Strange, were given even bigger bottles to drink.

"I was talking to her and she was a nice lady," Ybarra said. "She was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids."

I...i don't know if i should laugh or if i should be upset with this news...i mean, where the hell did you ever see a contest like this?...this is prety stupid and sometimes because of stupid things, as little as they might be, people die or kill themselfs...cause for me, this was a complete stupid suicide...

saphirekitty - January 15, 2007 03:03 PM (GMT)
um...ok i've heard of alchohol intoxication but DAMN! like i always say: too much of anything aint good for u. and at least now i kno its tru for a fact. thats seriousely messed up.

Snowflame - January 15, 2007 04:36 PM (GMT)
I heard it on the radio, but I dont understand. How could drinks and food be intoxicated when you eat or drink it to much?

Black Angel - January 15, 2007 07:02 PM (GMT)
She drank too much water, and didn't go to the bathroom.

So her bladder must have burst or something.

Either way, she was stupid for doing so.

It is one thing to die for your children, if it means that they'll be safe.. but this, this is just stupid.

I laughed when I read this, not because she died, but because of the sheer stupidity of it.

Oh wow...I'm caught between laughing at how stupid some people are, and feeling like people don't know when to quit...At least someone was smart enough to quit.

This is definitely worthy of a Darwin Award.

See things kill people tonnes of times cause they're stupid... like me, whoops didn't say that :...:

Anyway they just over react

This is an instance in which I believe that we should remove all the safety labels and let nature run it's course. I mean come on people, have some common F***in sense.

Mystic Mage - January 15, 2007 08:56 PM (GMT)
Common sense is beautiful
It's a shame that most of the world doesn't have any

I don't like to laught at people dying but sometimes I can't hold it

In WoW
Someone got killed cause this person had a really good sword and this guy was jealous and went to his house and killed him

There was another who was mentally ill and when he ate/drank in the game he thought that was feeding. He died of thirst and starvation in the end.

The first example was pretty funny...

When you consume anything, whether it be water or french fries or whatever, you obviously know that the result is. A pic stinking pile of either feces or urine. These substances are considered poisons and are excreted through the body out of the respected orifices. If held in for too long, said poisons can kill you. "Nuff said.

Mystic Mage - January 16, 2007 05:50 PM (GMT)
Yeah

Death can be funny. Just don't let him touch you

Dictator - January 16, 2007 08:32 PM (GMT)
You have to remember that the body, when digesting things, takes only what is useful. It left anything harmful to be taken out as waste. Urin has a lot of things in it too.

No matter how smart you are, even if you're a genius, it doesn't count without common sense.

Other recipients for the Dee Dee Dee award include the guy who didn't give up his PS3 money, Britney Spears for marrying Kevin Federline, and that mopey liar Brookers.

Nope. She qualifies for a Darwin Award, because she removed herself from the gene pool, in a rather idiotic fashion.

Here is a Darwin Award.
