Title: Getting Permission VS Giving Credit

Alright, we all know you should credit stuff when you use it BUT does that mean it's always ok for you to use everything you happen to stumble across?
What do you think? (I'll post my opinion later)

No, because the creator would want to know what it's used for.

I'd say it's ok, as long as the creator didn't say no one could use it without his permission. As where it says get permission before using, that's different. You should respect their request and get permission instead of pissing them off and going into what can be looked at as stealing.

It is common curtisy to give credit though.

At this forum I go to, a lot of people have sprite sheets that just say to give credit and doesn't mention permission. Then someone used the sprites in a comic and someone said "Did you get (insert name here)'s permission to use his/her sprites"

Well, if you find sprite sheets from a search engine or hosted on another site it's not going to need permission since it never said that. i've used other people's sprites without permission, but only because I found the sheets and there was no contact info or anything. Also, they didn't say to give permission.

It's an easy mistake if the creator never says to give it.
