Title: It took 27 hours to run CHKDSK..

Jeez, how long is this supposed to take?

My 250 gb hd is in the midst of a virtual ping pong match between win xp home, and w2k pro..

I reboot, and log in to winxp (dual-boot) and it says that it needs to scan the 250 gb hdd.. I let it scan, and at phase 3 or 4 of 5, it says "inserting and index of $0 into file 25." it said that for like an hour.. so reset it thinking that it froze, and then boot back into xp.. this time I cancel the scan disk because initially, there wasn't anything wrong with it.. since it is a new maxtor hd that isnt even 6 months old.. and I wanted to see what file it had a problem with..

eh.. ok so login into my profile on xp, and can't access the drive.. I reboot, and start up into win2k pro, and cancel the scan, (mind you this being the first time needing to be scanned since I got it) and figure that it will be fine..

I boot up and I can access the drive, as well as the files except every 5-20 minutes I get an error message that says "File or Directory is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." I tried doing the scandisk in windows, but it tells me that it needs exclusive access to the drive, and that it is scheduled for the next reboot..

I, annoyed, and have a massive headache, decide to call it a night, and go to sleep..

I reboot the computer again, and go back into 2k, and let it scan.. shows a bunch of junk and it says the same thing as it did in xp.. for an even longer time..

later on tuesday at around 4pm, I reboot into 2k again, and as windows is starting up, I press ctrl + alt + del, and shut down explorer.. and then use the taskmgr, to navigate to the d drive, and perform the scan that way..

as of 8pm it was still scanning, and on phase 4, with 2 pips..

it just finished scanning yesterday at 7 pm..

I have a Knoppix disk, so in case I have to format, I can use knoppix to boot up and access the drive so I can remove, and back up my files without losing anything. i can put it in my CD drive, so that I can use my DVD burner for backing my stuff up..
