Title: If..

You were on an airplane sitting next to someone who was watching porn on his laptop, what would you do?
VirusZero - July 16, 2007 12:51 AM (GMT)
Let's see... My options are:
- Watch too
- Ask him to stop
- See if I can change seats
- Ask the flight attendant to see what she recommends
I dunno what I'd do cause I've never even been on an airplane let alone have something like this happen. But I imagine I'd ask a flight attendat first see what the rules/regulations are and if he's violating them, (And even if he's not) then I'd ask him to stop watching and do that in private.

My dad works for American Airlines.. there's no way I'd embarrass him like that..
I understand that there is a time and a place for everything, but as long as the passenger has his headphones in, where nearby passengers can't hear it, and isn't going around showing it to people and stays to himself, then it should be ok, and there shouldn't be a problem.
But if another passenger wants to be nosy, and look over his shoulder, then the problem is his to have, as that passenger was wrong for looking over his shoulder.
I mean, if I were a muslim, and there was a Christian sitting next to me reading a book condemning Muslims, and I take offense to it, does that mean that I have the same right to complain?
After all, I am the one who breached their privacy by looking over their shoulder in the first place. They were just sitting there minding their business.
I look at this situation the same way. If he is not showing it to others, or listening to it out loud where others can hear it, or touching himself while watching, and is just minding his business, then I have no problem.. and I'll mind my business.
After all, how would I know anything if I weren't looking over his shoulder?

Speaking from experience (I've used a laptop when traveling on a bus... which is somewhat similar I would imgine.) Your right next to them, And even without looking directly at the screen (through perhiperal vision) you would see it, and there isn't anything you can do about it. Unless of course you spent the entire time with your whole head turned away from it. So you can't really avoid it, If your close enough to read the book their reading... Then your way too close. But with a 13+ inch screen... it's a little harder to ignore.
From the experience I've had, anytime you use a laptop, it's pretty common to see people even just once, glance over to see what your doing. It's a curiosity, people are curious, and I have no problem with that, it is human nature after all.
So in that respect, if your going to watch it I'd think you either ask the people sitting around if they mind, cause it's very crude to do it in public. (Like you said, there's a time and place for everything. And if they even have to think about "gee should I ask to see if he/she/they mind if I do this" then maybe you use some commonsense and think maybe you shouldn't do it in public anyway. )
As far as reading an anti-<what ever group you may belong to> book on a plane/bus, I have less of a problem with that because unless your reading along with them too, (In which case your way too close, and it's your own fault, so back off) then your probably going to be reading your own book or doing what ever to pass the time.
And from what I said earlier with laptops being attention grabbers any flicker of the screen will draw your attention to it, even if you try to ignore it.
So I'd say it'd be a safe assumption that if you wouldn't do it at work/school/with girlfriend's parents/ own parents/ etc... then you definitely shouldn't do it in public.

That's true too, though you can purchase a privacy screen, for your laptop, that way your screen is only visible by you.
However my statement was based on the assumption that if the user has his head phones in for his own privacy, then more than likely he'd have a privacy screen on his laptop for the same reason.
In that case, the only way the screen could be seen by another person is if they were looking over the person's shoulder.

Have I ever told you that you ask ALOT of questions which require ALOT of thought?!
Your hurting my head!
I duno what I would do...
On one hand, sence he isent purposly trying to get attation to himself, there isent anything you can do. Then again, its disturbing that you would wana jack off in a airplane.
Knowing me it would REALLY freak me out. I'm homophobic, and even if he was looking at straight porn being next to any other guy who is aroused would seriously bug me.
*Puts on a 'stache and glasses and grabs a ciguar for a joke*
"I've seen Snakes on a Plane but this is reducious!"
BUH DUMMM CHISH!
Dark Mage - July 16, 2007 11:14 AM (GMT)
I would just go "Whatever, it's their problem" and just listen to music and look away, it's their choice and I don't care, if they get busted then I'll just say "Whatever" because they did it to themselves.
VirusZero - July 16, 2007 05:23 PM (GMT)
Still, this person has no idea who could be sitting next to them, what if it wasn't you but a child? Would they still watch it?
(And as far as privacy screens go I've never even heard of them... Let alone that they were not mentioned in the initial situation. So I've been basing my argument thus far on the fact it was an easy to view lcd screen in the most comfortable position for viewing for the owner. Because face it, if they're going to be watching porn their not going to be curled up in a ball contorted so others won't see, their looking out for their own comfort and wants. And because of that, their probably not too interested in what others think/want.)
Using headphones isn't really a common curtesy... It's more for yourself than anyone else anyway. You want to hear so you use headphones, it's not so you don't disturb others, it's so you can hear clearly and block out whats going on around you.
Also I suppose it might matter where on the plane they were sitting... Cause if they were in the front-middle row then there would be more people potentially to see than if he was in the very back corner. (Where it was just you and him.)

T.T (Noone laughed at my joke. I'm just trying to tone down an allready too serious topic... :-[ )
Dark Mage - July 17, 2007 07:20 AM (GMT)
If it was a child sitting next to him I'd ask him politely to turn it off because I don't want the child being corrupted or if there were children around him I wouldn't want them getting corrupted.
Dr.Tails - July 17, 2007 02:52 PM (GMT)
....Crap. i guess im not a good person like you guys, cause if it was me sitting next to him i would ask him what he's watching, and if its what i think it is, i would most likely just bust out laughing. Cause that situation would be pretty darn funny stuff. I wouldn't report him or anything cause i dont think thats illegal, i'd just laugh at him, and tell my friends about it later. Why do i do these things, im such a horrible person :-_-:
BlackDevilX - July 18, 2007 07:11 AM (GMT)
Be honest. Actually id prob do what every guy would do. keep my mouth shut however look at his screen through peripheral vision and try not to get a hard on, look at him and jokingly say, "wow i saw that one, it was a goodie", or be like HEY HES WATCHIN GAY PORN!!
Cmon now....
Mr. Nest - July 18, 2007 07:52 AM (GMT)
Psst hey buddy, you got a headphone jack splitter, I need to get in on that!
Naw just kiddin, I would only watch long enough to identify the Genre. You know, see if it's Lesbian midget mud wresling, Albino siamese twin orgy, One woman magician act (she makes EVERYTHING dissapear!), THIRSTY businessman, etc. just so when I tell the story that starts " you'll never guess what movie I saw on my flight!"

then ill mind my business and read my book or watch my own porno movie (joking). you get the idea.
