Title: Tazers
VirusZero - January 31, 2008 04:37 AM (GMT)
Should police use tazers? what about all the deaths around them? So that asks the question:
Are they safe?
what are your thoughts on them?

i think for sure thy NEED to because the the amount of lifes they save out weighs the small death toll plus i don't care if it hurts , if you don't want the pain then give up/don't do the crime

My view is:
Instead of using a tazer the police could just use their 9 mils... Give a warning then empty a clip into them... Almost guaranteed fatality.
So which is better? cleaning up a dead suspect or apprehending one that's just been shocked into submission?
I'll go with the shocked suspect.

Death for a tazer is rare. However, they should adjust the charges. lets say an old man has a gun . A strong shock could kill him...but a weak shot could make him shoot them. I SAY SHOOT EM IN THE FOOT

Not the foot, the knee. :)

True but my point still stands, they could just always use a gun and completely mangle the person... Which in most every case would be loads more lethal than a tazer... even using the nightstick, one good crack with that guarantees broken bones, good chance of broken bloodvessels and if hit a second time possible internal hemorraging.
A strong shock will incipacitate and unless the positive and negative terminals cross the heart it shouldn't be lethal... Providing that more than one tazer isn't used.
Like that case where the police broke into a girl's home, they found her in her bedroom, then proceeded to use 3 tazers on her... and resultingly she died.
It was a bit excessive using 3 tazers... but it still took 3 to be lethal, one officer could have used his gun... then it most certainly could have been lethal.

Ok was she un armed? Was there a NEED to use 3 tasers? 1 easily does it Hell Even 2! but 3 is too much. Id report the cops

I think they could of upped it a little more, maybe 5 or 6. You know... just to get the point across...
But seriously.. I think the lethality of tazers is misunderstood. The affects are short term and it's one of the quickest ways to apprehend someone with low conflict. When you think about it, ever method takes some form of force or pain. They're just trying to find a solution.
Now in the case VZ mentioned, I know that that was an excessive usage. She was in her bed, wouldn't it have already been easy enough to control the situation? I doubt she was armed or could put much against three police officers if she wanted to. Sure, guns would have resulted in an violent ending display, but the abuse of tazers did anyway. You have to know what is enough... In my opinion, those officers should have been convicted of something because I doubt they were taught that to use three tazers on one person.
That being said... It still is better then one bullet. In my opinion the tazer should be used on more nonviolent people, the guns for real problems.. though I've seen cases of its abuse.

AHH SO MUCH VOLTAGE GOING THROUGH MY BODY

50,000volts is what the taser uses... but it's not the volts which kill. It's the amps.
Here's the way I remember the difference, compare it to a water hose.
Volts - the water pressure, and how fast water is flowing through the hose
Amps - how big the hose is, this allowing for more water to flow through.
Low amps but high volts is just like a small hose with fast spray... it hurts but it's not gonna kill you.
High amps but low volts is just like getting hit with a swimming pool all in one shot...
And the problem with dropping the voltage is that it takes more voltage to subdue a larger target... Like a 7' tall person weighing 300 lbs is gonna need more than the 20,000 a spark plug delivers... it's gonna hurt but not for long nor enough to stop them. It'd just tick them off. At 50,000 most everyone will feel that for a good while and not want a second helping.
As for the case I mentioned, I do think it was a situation where excessive force was used... but what I was trying to draw attention to was that it takes 3 tazers to kill compared to one bullet. Thus the lethality of tasers is much lower.

i think prisoner who committed major crimes (Murder,Rape, ect) need to take a tazer to the chest every day in jail
if you don't want that pain THEN DON'T KILL/RAPE/HURT SOME ONE

uhh the phrase is
If you can't do the time then don't do the crime.
