Title: Rev is dead.
VirusZero - March 25, 2008 04:42 PM (GMT)
Like the title says. The revolution (aka Nintendo's newest console for the 7th generation. Why do I call it this and not the official name they now use? because I personally hate the name they gave it) is quite possibly in serious trouble (Or if not now, it may very well be in it soon). Why is this you ask?
Because:
1- The rev has very few great exclusive games. (Metroid prime 3 and SSBB)
2- They rely on the virtual console to resell old games at too high a cost. (10$ for a n64 game, and 6? for an snes game, 5$ for a nes game) or something like that, but even still they're too much for games that have already been sold once.
3- the rest of the games they have are pretty much party game collections (mario and sonic at the olympics)
4- (This one is from what I hear from people who have used the system...) The online is terrible.
Couple this with the fact that the rev's hardware is not as good as the others so 3rd party developers are (arguably) shying away from it in favour of the others so they can produce better looking games.
Discuss.

Not true. The Wii is getting Rock Band in June so that'll spark some cash flow. Not to mention you have Suda 51's No More Heroes, which is a great title. Wii Ware titles are coming out soon so an even wider range of titles will be seen. The only reason the online is so faulty is because it's free, unlike the X-Box where they charge you out the wazoo for everything. Due to the free online, servers tend to be not as top notch as they should.
VirusZero - March 26, 2008 12:18 AM (GMT)
Last I checked the PS3 servers were free and they seemed to be decent... (Some content, typically expansions for games and the like, you had to buy but otherwise you could play games online for free...)
And the Xboxlive... well I've not used it so I have no idea.
Word is that rock band won't be online...
SourceSo that may affect it's sales some.
As for the wares games... They aren't more compilatations of (crappy) minigames are they? Because if they are, then they cannot count as real games.
Link - March 26, 2008 04:31 AM (GMT)
No. I don't believe the Revolution (Wii) is dead. The Wii ware titles are not just minigame collections, but full games. We're getting Final Fantasy: My Life as a King which is basically like Crystal Chronicles for the Gamecube. They have a Dr. Mario game, they even have other games for it. Along with new channels like Pokemon Ranch.
Okay, I'm going to be really harsh here but...The only reason why third part developers have left the Wii, is because it takes more time to make a Wii game. They can't just throw something together and hope for it to sell like hotcakes. Let's face it, No More Heroes is a hit because it has creativity and it proved that you don't need graphics to be a hit.
The online isn't that bad. They're just complaining because they can't talk smack with their headsets, or play random people online and see their names. Truthfully, I'm perfectly fine without the smack talk, and having to add random people I don't even know. All in all the Wii is much better IMO, and doesn't seem like it'll be dead, or dying anytime soon.

A rev game takes more time to develop... You know that's utter bs right?
The rev is on comparison level with the PS2... No where's near the PS3/Xbox360...
That includes development time. The experts have stated that currently the PS3 is the hardest to develop for (Thus it takes the longest.)
Now if you want to see some REALLY harsh comments stay tuned.
Headsets and that I could careless, but the whole friend code thing is a bit over the top in terms of connecting... It seems nintendo tried to make it child safe and so they used that ridiculous code system. It makes connecting far harder than it should be and with nintendo's supposed issues with online already it just makes their online capabilities less than stellar.
Now you couple this with several other key issues and suddenly the rev just isn't worth it.
Ok, you can't download much in the way of extra content (due to the lack of a hard drive on the rev.) Sure you can store things on a SD card but thats not a huge amount of room (even with a 2gb one) and I'm pretty sure both the other consoles have that capability as well. ( I know the PS3 has that ability atleast. )
The rev's game line up is poor at best, Brawl being the only real killer app for the system at this point, and even then it's still over rated. (I'm not going to lie, all the current gen consoles could use more games... But the rev is particularly poor here.) You have your minigame line up (And really, how long can you play minigames before they get boring...), virtual console to buy already released games again and finally the real games such as Brawl or Metroid prime 3... which just mentioning those 2 pretty much sums up the majority of the rev's great games. (Sorry but even with Twilight princess it still doesn't add up to a reason to buy a rev.)
The whole remote for it is just a massive gimmick, so the system is based on a gimmick... Remind anyone else of the virtual boy here?
And don't even consider preaching to me about how this system encourages people to play, because I don't buy that. You see how every one is going crazy for it because it is so simple but that has it's own set of disadvantages. (Driving developers off by chance? or atleast fever developers taking risks at developing on the rev. Because let's face it, if the controls don't work the game isn't going to sell.)
As far as no more heroes, what does that make maybe 1-2 fairly new creative games on the rev? As good as nintendo games are the Mario games aren't going to last forever, Mario already is getting stale (Once you've played Mario64 you've virtually played every 3D platformer Mario game that Nintendo has released since, save for a few minor tweaks and graphical updates. Sure you have other venues in the mario series but even then, they can't be used forever. They're on mario party 11 by now right? and then you have paper mario, and the seemingly nigh exhaustive list of mario <sport game>)

I gotta agree with VZ man. When i bought a wii, i was expecting some prowess to it, however, i bought Sonic and the Secret rings, and that game was TERRIBLE! No one told me it would be so bad!.
The whole friend code thing, is blind. There no notification if someone adds you, and i think thats terrible. And btw VZ Xbox Live for Xbox360 is free, however to play online you have to pay. There are two packages. Silver and Gold. Silver you can download demos, and movies and stuff, and gold is to play online, and do the latter.
With XBL when you add some one it will say, This person wants to add you as a friend. (something along those lines). Also the wii, pretty much only has brawl. Currently the only thing i use the wii for is to check the weather, and to play brawl, other then that im on the 360 streaming my downloaded movies to my 360, downloadign DEMOS (which IMO is a PRO FEATURE and saves you tons of money so you can try before you buy) and Playing DMC4 (Best game that i own for the 360 so far besides BioShock and Halo3......and Turok lol j/k) I DID however download Super Mario Brothers 3 from the VC, and it was a waste. No save system or anything. At least when the 360 redoes an old game they add a save state, but nooo their save state requires you to go back to the wii menu for a 'suspended' game play. If it wasnt for the fact that i have dont return consoles, i would have returned the wii.
ALSO I HAVE PLAYED MARIO GALAXY. Can anyone say "Mad Space" From SA2b? And that level annoyed the PISS OUT OF ME.
However the wii IS good for family things such as if you record a vid from your digi camera you can play it on the wii by taking the card and sticking it in, also transferring maps to brawl, and such..but thats it. As for the whole playing music on the wii you have to add it to the sd card. But the 360 you can rip cds, plug in your device, and the ebst feature of em al. REMOVE ANNOYING BG MUSIC FROM GAMES AND ADD YOUR OWN!! That has to be the coolest thing i have ever seen. Wiisports=great workout, thats about it.
However IMO i believe the wii is a family console, not just a person. Thats why they named it wii, because its only fun if you have 2+ players. Because i get more fun playin it with my gf then i do by myself (cept brawl i played teh hell out of that)
BlackCloudX - March 26, 2008 08:40 PM (GMT)
I have to agree with VZ on this...PS3 games do take a while...in fact years ive been working on FFVSXIII since 2003 it takes time indeed.
Yes i would say the wii is more of a family console but it has less exclusives T.T i only play Brawl and Metroid Prime 3. The Wii ware sucks... Nintendo is asking for $5 for an internet channel? seriously sony didnt do that.
The online servers do kinda suck on the wii... think about it when Halo 3 was released they had a slight problem for multiplayer and got it fixed right away. Alot of people are having problems playing brawl online ( yes your wii is dirty cuase brawl uses a different CD making it harder to read) and nintendo hasnt done anything to fix it yet its totally random. PS3 servers are decent i really hadnt had a problem with any of them.
Yes the remote is a gimmick. not all the time it works and it gets people angry. honeslty do you want motion sensing getting in your way?
The Wii does have alot of sport games too. The Wii has the potential they just couldnt get it done right.
Who wins the war on exclusive games for the next coming years? PS3 >.>
ClockHass - March 27, 2008 02:02 AM (GMT)
Yeah.. no Cloud on the exclusive games thingay.. =/
But, anywaez...
The Wii is more of a party system if you know what I mean. Grab a couple of friends sit down and chillax. My friend has a Wii and I'm Wii sporting like mad when I play. The games are more focused for families, not teenagers and college kids. I remember when I read in a magazine before the Wii came out. When they first announced the usage of the remote Nitendo said the purpose was to get older people involved with the system, like adults or people who don't generally play video games because it would let them interact with the system better and the remote would remind them more of a TV remote compared to the other consoles' controllers. That's what the Wii's target is.
I don't think the Wii is dead. No, it's different and really stays outside the 360 and PS3 competition, almost creating its own category for gaming. It's too different to be compared and people are buying the system and its games, so it's not dead and probably won't die. It's living its success just like every good system has. There's no chance of a Dreamcast effect here either because the Wii came out after the 360 and around the PS3 where the PS2 came out after the Dreamcast killing it. So yeah, the Wii isn't dead.

The titling of this topic is more to incite ranbid fanboys to come flame me for saying the truth more than anything... or encouraging people to click the topic thinking "What is this guy nuts? he can't surely think this so soon into a consoles life span?" And thus draw them in so they'll read what I said.
As far as dead, no it isn't yet, but it certainly is hurting, it's in very rough shape despite what the sales figures will tell you. (you buy it and all 3 of it's great games and your set for a while... there isn't many games on it worth buying in the first place so after you get the main ones it's minigame collections and virtual console for you.)
As far as being it's own category? No... I wouldn't think it is because it is still a game system. Therefore it still fits into the whole console wars.
But so far it seems like more people are agreeing with me than disagreeing... Which intrigues me, I had figured that most would be like:
1- Argh, your crazy, the rev is great, you go die in a fire
2- eh, it's ok, but i don't agree with what you said because <reason>
3- i have no opinion on it.
thefishofdoom - March 28, 2008 02:08 AM (GMT)
I disagree
yes it wont have as many big games coming up but there are a few like mario kart. also i never call a system dead, hell i still play my N64, you never no what game will be smash hits
i want another LoZ game
ClockHass - March 28, 2008 05:14 AM (GMT)
As far as being in its own category, I'm talking about its style. Compare gameplay to PS3 and 360 which are closely similar. The Wii is different.. I understand it's still in the 'Console War.'
The Wii isn't going to die unless it can't produce within the next couple of years, and even then with a console such as it, it still has a chance even if the gap is small. I personally have no actual bias toward the Wii or any system, but speaking realistically, the Wii does have games. They might not be top selling games or games that interest you, but a lot of the games interest certain target groups.

Oh Sir you is funny. No but seriously dude, When i got a wii the first thing i thought was....why the hell are their so many blank spaces?! Oh well, Anyways it seems that Nintendo is adding a few things to the wii system, such as a tv feature and such.
HOWEVER, I will say this, other then DMC4, DOA4, HALO 4(3 lol), SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, BioShock, Turok (boring game amirite) and Friend or Foe (oh lawd) There hasnt been anything else that interested me.
I am considering buying a PS3 so that once again i have all 7th gen systems. But no games interest me besides KH3, FFXIII and that game 8 Days. However if something were to arise such as... Silent Bomber 2 (SB 1 great game, Wish it was for PS2) then ill consider buying it.

As far as PS3 games go... I've found a dozen or so that I want... Starting with these ones:
(Uncharted: Drake's fortune, Heavenly sword, Ratchet: Tools of destruction, Resistance: fall of man, Call of duty 4 and Kane and Lynch: Dead men. )
Which if you compare with the rev... Metroid prime 3 and ssbb. (I wouldn't get twilight princess on it.)
BlackCloudX - March 29, 2008 09:59 PM (GMT)
heavenly sword, i wasnt satisfied its too short compared to god of war and it looks less hack and slash it looks more like hit and run T.T
i know the blank spaces for the wii suck... i still have them and you gotta pay for an internet channel?!?
BlackDevilX - March 30, 2008 03:57 AM (GMT)
Yeh...I payed for it...i waisted 5 bucks.....
VirusZero - March 30, 2008 05:54 AM (GMT)
Which is why I rather like the PS3... I pulled it out of the box, hooked it up and within a few minutes had it online browsing the web just like my computer does. No extra fees, no blank spaces for features to be (supposedly) added at some unspecificed later date or added at some cost. Everything out of the box was ready to go.
As far as the virtual console vs the Playstation Network... From what I understand the PSN is a much better value. ( How do I say this? well consider this, Nintendo charges 5$ for an nes game... 8 bits, poor sound etc... and 10 for an N64 game. Whereas on the PSN for 6-8$ you get a PSX game. So it's 2$ cheaper and when the game is downloaded the PS3 upscales the graphics some so it looks better. And if my understanding is right, you can download these games to your psp... So If you have a psp then it makes it definitely worth it, especially if you never played that game the first time but heard good things about it. Like Valkyrie Profile, an exceptionally rare and supposedly very good game. Though I will sy it'd be nice to see more games released into the PSN market.)

Yeah they also update weekly with game add ons, game demos, and movie trailers.
its internet is pretty easy to use and chatting with freinds seem really easy
i do hope they add some good PSX titles this year
AJ howd you get it free? i dont have the channel yet and i dont plan on wasting 5 bucks for nintendo which has crappy internet servers
BlackDevilX - March 31, 2008 04:55 PM (GMT)
Me and Short joke about this, Nintedo is stuck in 1988 with this whole "internets" thing. Their online play is terrible. I rather pay for it on xbox360 and get PRO service
