I know they say it's impossible but I'm being serious here.

Lets say you have 6 apples that you bring to class and want to get rid of. Now if 2 people wanted them they'd each get 3. If 5 People wanted it they'd each get 1 and one fifth apples. If 1 person wanted it, he'd get them all. But what if noone wants the apples. That's the same as dividing it by zero. Noone gets a share and you are left with what you started with.

So here is my theorum.

n / 0 = 0 r n
If n =/= 0

Any number but zero divided by zero equals zero with a remainder of what was in the dividend (the number).

100 / 0 = 0 r 100

(2(6)) / 0 = 0 r 12

See what I'm saying? Is this already a therum or am I the first to think this?

Please this isn't spam. I'm being 100% serious about this.

I have always looked at it like the old riddle.. if a tree falls in a forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

An obvious answer to that would be yes, because a tree is a large object, and therefore would have a large mass, and anything that has mass would make a sound if it fell regardless of whether or not we were there to hear it.

But, to some, the question of whether or not the tree had actually fallen, would remain, because without actually having been there to hear it, or see it, we'd have no way of knowing. So, to some, that would be undefined.

But to me, I always understood it to be impossible, not because that is what we were told, but because we'd have no way of knowing either way.. I guess you can say that it is more or less a question of philosophy, than it is about math..

Either way you look at it though you still have the six apples left over that noone wants/can't be fiven away. A remainder.

Deviding by zero is the same as saying that you are leaving the number and not using it. So in a way you are right and in a way you are wrong. You are right in that it isn't being split up, but wrong in that it is still being put aside from the actual problem.

in a longer string of math....

There are 9 apples 6 are good and 3 are bad. 3 people want the good apples but noone wants the bad apples. How many of the total number of apples does each person get?

6 / 3 + 3 / 0 = 2 r 3

The three people each get 2 apples with 3 apples left over.

Normally you'd just throw that r 3 out because it's unnessesary, but dividing the 3 by zero puts it away.

See what I'm saying?

its not dividing by zero because the person still has all the apples the apples that are in one group of six

Dividing by zero is impossible because look at this equation and thought.

12 / 6 = 2

Now, that equation can be done oppositely.

6 * 2 = 12

See, a problem must have an inverse problem that can be completed, multiplication and division are inverses of each others.

Look at this problem though.

12/0= x

So would 0 * x = 12?

It's impossible because of that.

120 / 5 / 4 / 3 = 2

Hmmmm....

Ok I concede defeat. It sounded reasonable to me though.
