Title: Frets on fire
VirusZero - September 29, 2008 10:22 PM (GMT)
Ok, so you wanna play the new guitar hero or play new songs for your copy of GH3 on PS3/Xbox 360, but that costs a fair bit of money... And you just don't have that kinda cash. So what is one to do?
How about downloading the free game called Frets of fire... It's nearly identical to Guitar Hero with a few minor changes...
1- it's FREE, full stop, free. As in no paying for it at all.
2- You can use your Guitar Hero/Rockband guitar if you have it, but you can also use your keyboard as well.
3- It comes with the tools to add new songs.
4- There is a site specifically for the uploading and locations of new songs...
But where can you get this game?
Right here:
http://fretsonfire.sourceforge.net/And for the extra downloadable content... You'll have to find that yourself.
Has anyone else ever played this game before?

yeah, it's a horrible alternative to Guitar Hero. It lags way too much and the overall control set-up is beyond quirky. Don't waste your time with this one.

Hmm, the lag can be fixed quite easily... Drop the framerate from 80 to a more reasonable 60 and everything is fixed. (I'm not sure why they decided 80fps was a good idea.. but oh well.)
Control set up can also be changed... so it's not that bad. (And if you have the guitar hero/ rockband guitar anyway, you can just use that anyway, from what I understand that is...)

is that like, flash flash revolution?

The reason I suggested this again was:

Because some of you may be like me, and don't have 60 dollars for the game, let alone a hundred and 20 odd dollars (Or whatever the actual cost is) to plunk down for the game and the guitar...
So this is a Free alternative... I'm not expecting it to match up 100% to the Guitar hero or rockband...
Apparently another solution to fix lag is just to install the RF4 mod... (Which apparently addresses some of the issues with the game as well as adds some neat inclusions like GH styled multiplayer and whatnot. )

Well... With Rock band out why would you play Frets on Fire. Playing drum parts is a lot funner then the guitar parts. Oh, then there's Guitar Hero 4 coming out which has drums and basically the same things as Rock Band as well...
EXCEPT: You can create your own songs in GH4.
Frets on Fire is a 'Ghetto' alternative to Guitar Hero or Rock Band. It does have a plus side, easier to get new songs. Playing the same songs in GH can get boring and not everyone can download the new songs online.
I think for being free though that Frets on Fire is pretty decent.

Meh drum parts don't mean a thing to me when ur a real drummer.
ClockHass - October 1, 2008 06:54 PM (GMT)
I am a real drummer. That's the funny thing. But I much rather prefer to play the drum parts over the guitar parts. And when I get frustrated with those drums I go and beat some actual ones, musically of course because then I'd just be a beater.
Also, it doesn't matter about being a real drummer because not everyone is. Some people appreciate those parts of the game because it changes it up from the guitar and makes it a bit more innovative.

I'd love to learn to play a real instrument (Guitar... not drums) but I lack the key aspects required to...
1- Money (To buy an instrument, to pay someone to teach me)
2- Time (To actually practice and learn songs.)
So really this is the closest thing to playing an instrument as I'll get (for now anyway).
But there are mods that make this closer looking to your GH or Rockband game... (Also free ofcourse)
But even if GH4 has the create your own song ability, do you know if it's import the song then it autogenerates, or do you have to go in and set it yourself? Because if it's the latter then it's not that great of a feature. (Frets on Fire already has that...)
And as for DLC, FoF has a much greater library... And there are loads of people hard at work making and uping new songs all the time. Whereas the GH you have to buy/download what they give you, you don't get the fan backing as much... (Well on the PC version of GH, possibly, but I would say not on the console versions as much.)

Yea and it sucks, if i can't hit the notes to begin with...what makes anyone think I can hit the notes just toput them there.
and as for gh4 im kinda excited about the music studio feature. i am afraid that it will be just like FoF though seeing that it's for "creating your own music."

GH4 does look very cool
GH3 was a let down for me personally
But when you're talking about "the game sucks if ya can do it in real life" I'm sure that's deffinately true.
But until they make the keyboard version of Guitar Hero then i'm sold :p
As for Frets on Fire, it's okish, but definately not as good as Guitar Hero
technogeek - October 2, 2008 07:56 PM (GMT)
Mystic you do know that gh3 came out for pc and mac right? as in the keyboard is useable. I have gh3 for pcand i use the keyboard all the time.

The point of GH4's studio is to make music. It's for people who don't understand music to get into music and producing it.
Also, it's not just importing the song and it auto generates, and it's not taking songs prewritten. The studio is for making completely original compositions. From what I've seen of it, it's pretty advanced and it allows for a lot of song creation. It has rhythms tones, lead tones, bass tones, different drum sets to choose from, and the ability to function key board parts. Also, it's not necessary to write the drums, and maybe ( not possitive) other parts in the game. You can import midi files that you make for those parts. Now if that's not being creative it's hard to describe what is. Oh, it also has sensors for dynamics, loud, soft, etc.
I love to make music, I do it all the time. Write my own pieces and play them, make mp3s, etc. However, this thing still intrigues me. As far as I'm concerned, FoF has nothing on this game. Like I said, it's decent for being free, but if you want full quality I'd recommend GH4 or Rock Band.
