Title: Best PC
Emotionless-Geek - July 29, 2009 08:16 PM (GMT)
i dont mean PC as in those windows v mac commercials XD
I mean PC as in Personal Computer.
I should be coming into some money within the next few months and i want to buy a GREAT gaming computer. I was looking at Alienwares newest/best computers and was curious if there was another company who made better PC's than AlienWare.
The type of games im looking to run are Pvp or player versus player games. Like Team Fotress 2 and Left For Dead, but not only that, i also want to run MMO's.
((Hate that i have to run windows, bleh))

there are alot....and i do mean ALOT of better computers than alienware.....i've heard a lot of bad things about alienware....for what you're gonna be doing....here's the minimum of what you will want
case with at least a 400 w power supply
100 gb hard drive....(at the very least)
2 gb ram
Nvidia(i prefer over ati) 8 series with at least 512 mb ram.
intel or amd dual core proccessor with at least a 2.0 ghz core clock.
sound card of your choosing
extras of your choosing....that's kinda the minimum to do what you want and still have some performance.....
you want speed and power? try a quad core or a dual core with a 3.0 ghz core clock....4 gb ram....nvidia geforce 9 series with a gb ram....or 2 for sli =) 500 gb hard drive....
try going here....

Im looking to build something HUGE...
The Alienware i was looking at had about a Terabyte of space. And im only looking to build a laptop. Sorry if i didnt state that before.

I believe alienware charge you a lot for what you get.
I suggest reading reviews. I ended up getting a Chillblast Fusion Sidewinder computer after reading a review from PC Pro (Which i got a few upgrades with for speakers keyboard mouse and case) and i'm happy for it... Something like that from alienware would of been plenty more expensive. (Although arguably probably would of been prettier)
Remember an already set out one will be best value... starts costing more when you change for better processor, hard drive etc... then the cost goes up quickly.
You don't need something too powerful. I'm running crysis on Max graphics on this thing and this only starts to struggle when things get hectic.
If you're buying a new computer soon though wait for Windows 7 to come out... getting it with a computer will be cheaper than buying one with vista and getting Windows 7 later.
Also! Don't see what's so wrong with Windows... Mac can sure do some media stuff better, and are SAFER (I bet you they go on about all this virus stuff but someone someday will kill all macs due to lack of security cause they're so cocky they can't get viruses).
But Windows is so much better at the games (And Windows 7 is meant to be much faster than vista so my friends tell me... I'm gutted I didn't buy it when it was £45)
Though Emotionless if you want a machine for gaming get a Desktop.
Most laptops have overheating problems... and i bet ya even if you put tonnes of money into it it'll break faster than most desktops and only be any good plugged in and on a hard surface.
When i got my computer the ATI was more value than Nvidea (Cross referenced it with about 10 different review websites).
My final suggestion is though.
Get the money you want to spend.
Read up all the reviews on computers. MAKE SURE YOU GET A GOOD MACHINE, don't want to waste your money here.
Also for laptop's imo best to go with premade rather than build ya self.
Check with other people before you buy stuff... they might point out things you miss.
And be sure you want a Laptop for ya games before you go in for it...
My mate got a laptop and he tends to only use it for gaming and regrets it now, wishing he got a desktop...
And be sure you want to build it... Warrenty's that come with prebuilt machines are very handy, i tell ya.
And i'm pretty sure laptops aren't easy to build.
... While I'm at it... Your computer will only ever be as good as the internet feeding it when playing online games... My Left 4 Dead plays max graphics at a perfect speed on single player but i still get lag when playing online... There comes a point where you stop reaching the point you'll make the game run faster and just start making the loading screen shorter.
While we're on it: Interesting fact my mate told me "Computers go out of date every 30 odd seconds... " *That said it's probably not true, but gives ya and idea how quickly the research is around computers ;)*

Consider custom building one then?
Start with a preferred CPU (Intel or AMD)
I recommend something like this
Intel MotherboardMatch it with the
Intel i7 quad core processor at 3.33 ghz per core.
Hit it with some
6 gigs of Cosair ram (3 sticks with 2 GB per. 240 pin DDR3 at 1600Mhz.)Now for powerful graphics... nVidia can provide this. Maybe a
GeForce 9800 gx2As far as sound cards...
Conexant or
sound blaster might be decent enough.
Hard drive is whatever size you want it to be... So say 500GB for ease. (Maybe Western Digital or Seagate? Or which ever one you prefer instead. Just besure it's compatible with the rest of the pc first.)
Though you'll probably need a decently powerful power supply for this... say 600 watts minimum. (Ensure you pick a reputable name brand for this as a faulty power supply can ruin components quicker than anything. As for what I think a reputable name brand is... I dunno, I've not actually looked around for power supplies before. Give a site like newegg a look or do some Google searching to figure out what the top manufacturers are.)
Total cost... Probably a couple thousand easy. I didn't look up the costs for everything but seeing as the ram I linked to was 183 US... I can imagine the rest being quite pricy. (Especially since some of the components I linked to are top of the line...)
Alternatively look at building or
buying a Supercomputer. nVidia has a guide on building one...

Well my desktop cost £1000 (including VAT)
But i did buy an awesome mouse, keyboard, case, and speakers which cost quite a bit.
Like i said depends what you're after, I ASSUME that laptops will cost more but that's me guessing.

I checked out ibuypower and it was good. Only mines came out over 3k. Not saying i dont have the means to buy it, its just not the price range i was looking for. I wanted to buy a laptop first, and then buy a super powerful desktop just because i wont be in a stationary spot for a little while and Laptops have that whole mobility thing going....
Im not to sure as to what the benefits of having a super computer would be. If someone could explain that to me, then i may consider getting one of those

Well in my opinion, gaming wise... there is a part where games stop getting faster in general with faster computers.
However you could probably get a better PC than mine if ya looking to get at the part where you can say you get the 'maximum' out of your games.
The computer you get will only ever be as great as you accessories... if you pour all your cash into an awesome computer you might regret not having good speakers etc...
Anyways it's completely up to you what you get... I can't suggest anything cause i wouldn't know what you want from your PC.
You seem to want more than one that just plays games well.
