Technogeek, I split your topic because the person you responded to hasn't been on since 2006, and I thought that this would make a good topic ok? flash.gif

I'll let Mr. Nest post the specs of his laptop since he has a better idea than I do..

I am too embarrassed to post the specs of my desktop.. so I'll leave it at that.. unsure.gif

ouch......

BA please don't take this the wrong way but you need an upgrade.

I am going to assume that what your comp has in it right now "does it for you" but those specs would kill me.

don't get me wrong

the dvd burner is a nice touch i'm looking for one of those myself.

May i reccomend an AMD Turion 64 bit dual core with a speed of your choosing

or if you have the money u can beef it up to an Intel Centrino dual core also with a speed of your choosing.

plaese note the intel is made to outperform the amd but the amd has the price advantage. the choice is yours

now i believe you said 328 mb of memory? not a bad start considering that xp requires you have 128 mb and most users have at least 256. may i suggest however beefing that up to at least a gig of mem for maximum performance.

LAST BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST.

I have noticed in a diff. post that you are using 98, 200 pro, ME? i can't tell the difference.(i hope to god you're not using ME)

People I know Vista looks nice But please i'm begging you

STICK WITH WINDOWS XP

yes stay with windows xp for at least another year. wait untill vista has a few more service packs.

A friend of mine also told me that Project Vista is being terminated at the end of this year so microsoft can work out the bugs. thats all for now. if u have any comp trouble.............come see me.

my screename should tell u something other than "Look at me! Im a kid thats just interested in flash and nothing else!"

Actually I've used AMD processors before and I've found that atleast in 1 regard they are better than the intel counterparts...

AMD processors while they may be a bit slower than intel, they can juggle programs faster and handle multiple open applications more easily than intel's chips.

And it's funny but I've heard a lot of people calling Vista stuff like: ME 2 and massive flop, and stuff like that. So I'll put it to you, have you tried vista?

I have tried vista... and aside from some difficulties I had in using it (through no fault on vista itself) it seemed ok... (I still wouldn't "upgrade" to it though...)

But if you were looking to upgrade your pc's cpu wouldn't you want to go for the intel core 2 duo? or the AMD equivalent?

Yes VZ i have tried windows vista i don't want to say i hated every minuete of it but as of right now there is barely anything compattible with vista plaus i already stated that vista is going to be terminated at the end of the year. the only good thing about vista.......to me...... is the voice command program. vista is a HUGE resource hog. And i quote from pc world magazine about vista first look. "Is vista worth the wait right now? NO Vista is a huge resource hog and not worth running yet." so as I said wait till a few more service packs come out. maby by then there will be alot more programs compatible with vista

I am in the middle of ordering a new laptop. my first actually

i am going for the intel due to intels better performance and battery life

I live in an amd familly but my father agrees with me about getting the intel.

but to tell the truth i couldn't care less about which processor as long as its 2.2 ghz

When ordering a laptop be wary of the graphics setup... If you have the money and are concerned with performance, get a laptop with a seperate graphics card... Shared chipsets are good for if you don't have the extra to spend... But they lack the power that a dedicated 128 or 256mb gfx card does... and it ties up your ram to use it.

By seperate I mean make sure the laptop doesn't use shared graphics chips...

See how in my laptop's description there is "Intel express 945GM 128mb shared gfx card/chip" Well that means that my compter substitutes ram for video ram... Thus taking it away from the system when it needs more vram.

Getting a seperate graphics card means that the graphics card installed in the laptop has it's own dedicated ram for just graphics, it doesn't borrow from the main ram to supplement whats on the graphics card...

No offense taken. flash.gif I know I need an upgrade, I've had this comp for 5 years.. When I got it, I was told that all it could handle was win98 SE..

The fact that I could install, and run xpsp2 with no problems was in and of itself a miracle..

Mr. Nest wants to get me a new comp for christmas..

I am not happy with my specs right now, as I can't do anything in c4d. It took Mr. Nest a week to render, and it messed up because of how slow my comp was.. but, at least I can still do stuff in cs2.. and I can still do things like browsing, or schoolwork on it..

I would certainly not use ME..

1. MS has stopped support for it so basically anyone using it would be vulnerable to security lapses that will never be fixed.

2. All it is is 98 with a facelift.

3. I fully intend to stick with XP, until MS pulls support for that too.. after which I'll probably switch to Knoppix.. that is, if it is as easy to install to a hard drive as windows.

4. I am at max capacity for my motherboard.. I have to get a new computer, because even if I did get a new motherboard, I would still have to get a new case, because the motherboard would not be compatible with the DELL case I am using now..

5. I have no interest in Vista outside of improvements on the gui, and how to do that same effect in my own graphics. I have heard a lot of things about vista, most of them bad, however, I am in no hurry to get it.

6. I said in other topic, that I was using a dual boot between winxp and win2k pro.. I have never had 98, or ME installed on my computer.. and as I recall, win95, 98, and ME were in the same boat so to speak, as they could not read ntfs file systems. They could only read and write FAT and FAT32 partitions, and they could not read files larger than 4gb.

NTFS file systems, on the other hand, could read a max of 2 or 3TB.. and were introduced Win NT4.. which is why you always see them paired together on software websites or packages.. i.e. Win95/98/ ME or WinNT/2K/XP. This would show that 2K is not the same as ME, or 98.

7. Your name could say what ever you want it to say, however I'd never be foolish enough to make a snap judgement about someone based on their username.

But hey, thanks for the tip.. I'll look into the processors, money isn't really an issue. flash.gif

well glad we're on the same page and glad we're all cool

so yea here is the problem with choosing the cpu when it comes to the turion and the centrino it like comparing apples to oranges(i think thats the right analogy) all i can say is do some heavy reasearch in it. glad to hear that money isn't an issue for ya

Vz the card im getting in my laptop is a 256 Nvidia geforce go 8600 Gt. it a nice card. its not the best but if it can play halo 2 then i'll be fine. Im getting 2 gb of ram in this laptop so the card has 256 dedicated memory and i think the rest is shared. but seeing that im getting 2 gig of ram i don't think that will be too much of a problem however if u know something i don't feel free to let me know.

the only thing that pisses me off about this laptop is i have to run vista. i can configure certain laptops for xp but my dad says that running xp with all of that advnced hardware could be a problem for xp. i don't know This topic is still open people. post ur specs and i'll give ya gab( translation tell me what ur specs are and i'll tell ya what i think)
